Moses was a man who knew what it was like to be in the presence of the Lord.
In his first encounter with God, we find him running from a very angry Pharaoh. He was hiding out, tending sheep on the back side of the desert for his father-in-law. One day while caring for his sheep, he saw something spectacular – a bush that was burning but not being consumed by the fire. He wanted to get a better look and as he approached the bush, the Lord spoke to Him…
“Moses! Moses!”
And Moses said, “Here I am.”
“Do not come any closer,” God said. “Take off your sandals, for the place where you are standing is holy ground.”
God didn’t have to tell Moses twice! When Moses heard the voice of the Lord, he hid his face out of fear as God continued to speak to Moses, telling him what plans He had for him. What a powerful encounter that must have been – to be in the actual physical presence of the Lord.
This may have been the first time but it was surely not the only time Moses heard from God. In fact, he had a very personal relationship with Him and received instruction from the Lord often. God spoke to him while afflicting Pharaoh and the rest of Egypt with the plagues. God also spoke to him at the Red Sea, in the desert, and on the mountain.
God knew Moses and Moses knew God.
Moses recognized the importance of being in God’s presence. It was there that he received strength, encouragement, and direction. His time spent with God also affected the people around him. Moses was able to be a good leader to the people because he was a great follower of God. They could tell that he had been with God, so much so that they made him hide his face because the glory of the Lord was shining from Moses! How amazing is that?
Do you feel like Moses the shepherd instead of Moses, the chosen one?
Like Moses on the back side of the desert, you may feel far removed from God’s purpose for your life. Maybe you’ve had prophetic words spoken over you in the past or maybe you’ve had a calling on your life for years but cannot see any sign of these things coming to pass. Don’t give up on God or on yourself. God turned the back side of the desert into holy ground. At first glance it probably looked like any other part of the desert and Moses may have even traveled that way many times before. But this time it was different….
The difference was God’s presence… there was Power…… there was FIRE!
God made that ground holy and he can bring the power of His presence to your ground when you least expect it. In the middle of your living room, in your car, or even at your desk at work, the presence of the Lord can become so strong that you cannot deny you are on holy ground. Allow Him to speak to you while in His presence. Let Him direct you, encourage you, and strengthen you. He has a purpose for meeting you there. After your encounter, don’t be surprised if people question the way you look – there’s just something about people who have been in the presence of God. They never leave the same!
Right now you may be facing a Red Sea, you might be in the middle of a desert, or you could even be on the mountain. Where ever you are, look for the burning bush…
That out of the ordinary thing that shows you God is there.
